Global Legal Director, Scotland

When a five-year-old boy was blinded in one eye after a regular eye exam failed to spot a retinal detachment, his father set out to support eye care professionals and their patients by revolutionising retinal imaging. As a result Optos was founded in 1992 with the goal to make a patient-friendly device to quickly capture the entire retina.

Today, optomap® is used in over 25,000 locations globally and offers single-capture, ultra-widefield retinal images of unrivalled clarity. The optomap image shows upto 82% (200°) of the retina in a single-capture and supports finding, documenting, and managing pathology. The clinical value and practice benefits of optomap are documented by more than 2,500 peer-reviewed publications.

Optos operates across the world from two primary locations in Dunfermline, Fife and Marlborough, Massachusetts.

Our devices help our customers to save sight and that gives real purpose to the amazing work we do at Optos every day. All of our people share a common mission – to save sight and save lives – and that makes our workplace a positive and forward-thinking environment.

We also now benefit from being part of the larger Nikon group, which means greater opportunities, without losing the culture of a collaborative, fast-paced and innovative scale-up.
